ELY-Keskus grant awarded to Advance Copper Flow Battery Development
We are proud to share that earlier in the spring, Halide Energy has been awarded a development grant by ELY-Keskus (Economic Development Centres). This support, granted through the Uudistuva ja osaava Suomi 2021-2027 EU regional and structural policy programme, strongly enables Halide Energy to push towards the development of its Copper Flow Battery technology via the ‘CBDEV’ project, and builds upon the existing financial backing from our investors.
Advancing Sustainable, Long-Duration Energy Storage
As industry electrification and renewable energy integration accelerate, the need for reliable, long-duration energy storage has never been greater. Our proprietary Copper Flow Battery (CFB) technology offers a cost-effective, scalable, and highly efficient solution that avoids the use of Critical Raw Materials—relying instead on a fully EU-sourced supply chain.
The CBDEV project focuses on refining our understanding of market requirements and demonstrating a novel, operating battery system. With this funding, we are working to:
1. Scale and optimize our in-house battery stack manufacturing process.
2. Develop our Battery Management System (BMS) to a test-bed level, ensuring safe and efficient performance.
3. Commission a 5 kW CFB demonstrator unit for feasibility testing with key industry partners.
What’s next?
The CBDEV project is a crucial step towards the commercialisation of our battery towards industry-aligned relevance, transitioning from lab-scale prototypes towards pilot production lines. Through the development of the modular 5kW battery stack, we build the required data and knowledge required for larger scale modular production.
We are truly excited to be accelerating Finland’s energy transition goals via battery storage, and helping energy-intensive industries and power producers meet their energy flexibility and sustainability goals.
This project is co-funded by the European Union.
